TRINITY MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW!

Terenure 8pts Trinity 25pts.   November 2nd2018;

Trinity travelled the short distance out to Dublin 6 to play Terenure in a very wet Lakelands Ground.  Last season Terenure owned the students and scored 80pts over the two games. In this encounter Trinity set out to put this right and dominated the early exchanges, and dominated most of the game.

In the opening play right wing Liam Turner was put away and when he passed back inside to support the ball was held up near the line before James Fennelly got bundled into touch over the corner flag.

Trinity continued to dominate possession and position on the field despite playing into a strong wind. They set up camp in the Terenure 22 and after several phases Trinity Number 8 Niall O’Riordan crashed over from close range.  This was followed by a penalty from out half James Fennelly.

The home team did not seem to have an answer to the relentless attacks from the students and when open-side flanker Max Kearney went over after more multiple phases the game looked out of reach for Terenure.

In the second half a combination of sloppy play from Trinity and inspired play from the home team saw Trinity defending their line for long periods – but they kept the Terenure attack from crossing the line. Terenure did kick a penalty but Fennelly immediately kicked one  to cancel that out.

Trinity came back into the game and, from a well-worked set piece move, outside centre Jack Kelly took a pass from Tomas Killeen to score by the posts. 25-3 with a few minutes to go, Trinity tried to go for the bonus point for four tries. The home team actually scored themselves a consolation try and from another set piece move captain Colm Hogan was tackled into the corner flag after a good run down the line. On the run of play Trinity will possibly regret not getting a bonus point  but a win is this league is always massive and pushes the students into mid table (5thPlace).

Trinity now take a three week break from All Ireland League action but they will be busy this week as they play two annual challenge matches in a week. They travel over to Cambridge University on Tuesday evening (7.30pm KO) before coming back to Dublin when they host Oxford University next Saturday November 10thin College Park.

Trinity host Shannon on 24thNovember in the All Ireland League.

Trinity U20s Premier XV had a hard earned win over arch rivals Lansdowne 32-23. In a game that saw Trinity do most of the attacking, they found the Lansdowne defence very well organized and extremely aggressive at the breakdown, The visitors were also very adept at hitting the students on the counter attack, scoring two tries off turnover. Trinity deserved their bonus point win in the end but it was a struggle. Next week they play undefeated Clontarf in a repeat of last season’s All Ireland Final. Clontarf have been outstanding this season and they deservedly hold top spot on ‘points difference’ over Trinity.
